Reported Speech
We use reported speech
when we want to tell someone what someone said. We use a reporting verb
(say, tell, ask...) and then change the tense of what was actually said
in direct speech.

Past Perfect
We use the past perfect when we are already talking about the past and want to talk about an earlier action in the past.
'She couldn't lend me some money because she had forgotten her wallet'
We make the past perfect with 'had' + the past participle of the main verb.
